Elephants have long been among my most cherished subjects. They are majestic, captivating, endlessly expressive. Even in their simplest gestures, they reveal stories worth telling. Addo may lack the dramatic backdrops of mountains or deep rivers, but here, one elephant stood apart at the waterhole. Alone, drinking, its trunk and tusks became my focus.

By narrowing in on these details, the gentleness of the species unfolds. The trunk’s rough skin and coarse hair contrast beautifully with the smooth, marked tusks, while the blurred water behind softens the scene. In Addo, large gatherings often turn the waterhole into chaos, but here, serenity prevailed, a moment of stillness and quiet grace.

This photograph is about the parts that speak volumes. Capturing the whole elephant would of lost the unseen beauty in its simplicity. It is a study in texture, balance, and presence, inviting viewers to see beyond size and power, and into the subtler truths of the species.

Taken in the Addo National Park, South Africa.
